Why Are Relationships Short-Lived in the Modern Age?

In today's world where technology transforms every aspect of life, bilateral relations are also greatly affected by this change. While social media, messaging applications and constant connection provide couples with ease of communication, they also bring new problems.

Nowadays, many couples have difficulty establishing a real emotional bond despite staying online throughout the day. Individuals who share the same environment but focus on screens may have difficulty recognizing each other's emotional needs over time.

“Digital closeness should not replace real closeness”

Central Hospital Psychiatry Specialist Dr. Evaluating the changes in modern relationships, Fatih Kızılağaç says the following:

"Technology is an important tool that facilitates communication in relationships, but when used uncontrolled, it can create an invisible distance between couples. Couples who constantly send messages to each other can sometimes neglect to share their true feelings and communicate face to face. For a healthy relationship, it is necessary not only to be connected, but to be in real contact." ERROR

1. Being in front of the screen all the time

The fact that phones, social media and digital content become priorities when couples spend together can reduce emotional sharing. Being physically close does not always mean being emotionally close.

2. Not communicating openly

Postponing problems instead of talking about them or expecting the other party to read thoughts can cause resentment to accumulate in relationships.

3. Comparing relationships with relationships on social media

Social media often only shows the positive sides of relationships. Comparing images in real life and the digital world can create dissatisfaction between couples.

4. Completely losing individual space

In healthy relationships, respecting personal space is as important as spending time together. Excessive control and the expectation of constant accountability can put pressure on the relationship.

5. Neglecting empathy and appreciation

In the busyness of daily life, understanding your partner's feelings, thanking them and showing that you value them can be pushed into the background. Small but regular signs of interest play a big role in strengthening the relationship.

“Relationships require effort and awareness”

Central Hospital Psychiatry Specialist Dr. Fatih Kızılağaçmakes the following suggestions for the sustainability of relationships:

"A healthy relationship develops not only with love, but also with mutual understanding, trust, communication and effort. Couples do not need to completely remove technology from their lives, but they need to determine the place of the digital world in the relationship in a balanced way. Listening to each other, spending quality time together and expressing emotions openly are the basic building blocks of the relationship."
