New Record in Solar and Wind Energy

According to international energy think tank Ember's data, globally in 2025. The installed solar and wind energy capacity increased by 17% compared to the previous year, reaching 814 gigawatts.

Thus, the solar and wind energy capacity put into operation last year broke a record. With this capacity increase, the total solar and wind energy installed power in the world reached 4 thousand 174 gigawatts.

Solar energy constituted the majority of the capacity that came into operation last year with 647 gigawatts, and it grew by 11% compared to the 582 gigawatt capacity increase in 2024. The total installed power in solar energy increased to 2 thousand 900 gigawatts by 2025.

The additional 167 gigawatt capacity in wind energy in 2025 increased by 47% compared to the previous year. With this increase, the total wind energy installed power in the world reached 1300 gigawatts.

The wind and solar energy capacity commissioned last year produces an estimated 1046 terawatt hours of electricity per year. According to Ember's analysis, this production could replace more than one-seventh of the electricity produced from gas worldwide. In other words, this capacity is sufficient to produce electricity equivalent to approximately 1.8 times Qatar's annual liquefied natural gas (LNG) export volume. At current market prices, this volume corresponds to an annual gas import cost of approximately 138 billion dollars.

Since the escalation of tensions following the US and Israel's joint attacks on Iran and Iran's retaliation, the production of all solar and wind power installed worldwide has replaced approximately 330 terawatt-hours of electricity from gas, providing potential savings of over 40 billion dollars.

Ember Data Analyst Leonard Heberer also pointed out that the growth scale and speed of solar energy is at an unprecedented level in the electricity sector and said, "With the accelerating increase in wind capacity, these technologies are on their way to becoming the backbone of the global electricity supply. As the scale grows, it will strengthen energy independence, reduce dependence on fragile fossil fuel supply chains, and help protect consumers from price increases triggered by geopolitical instability." found.
