Artificial intelligence era in homework

Cyber security company ESET drew attention to the threats arising from the misuse of artificial intelligence technologies and underlined the need to be careful about both information accuracy and fraud risks.

The rapid development of technology also leads to significant changes in the field of education. Especially with the spread of artificial intelligence technologies, the processes of students accessing information, doing research and preparing homework have been transformed to a great extent. Today, many students prepare their homework, accelerate their research and support their learning processes by using artificial intelligence-based tools. AI-powered tools are seen as a powerful learning aid for students. Thanks to these tools, students can quickly learn about complex topics and understand different sources more easily. It also helps students create a general framework about the subject during the research process, determine the main headings, and discover which aspects the research can focus on.

However, there are some risks and limitations of using artificial intelligence. Chief among these are academic honesty and accuracy of information. Although artificial intelligence systems produce answers based on a wide range of data sources, they may not always provide completely accurate, up-to-date or contextual information. On the other hand, security risks come to the fore. It is recommended that students do not share their personal data and school information on these platforms while preparing homework, because some artificial intelligence services can store or process users' input to improve their systems.

Artificial intelligence can also become a tool of cybercriminals

ESET experts also drew attention to the threats that arise with the misuse of productive artificial intelligence technologies. Social engineering is among the methods frequently used by cybercriminals for fraud. Artificial intelligence-supported methods have now begun to be used in these attacks, which are usually carried out through phishing e-mails, messages or phone calls. Thanks to large language models (LLM), threat actors can create more convincing phishing messages and even try to deceive users by producing deepfake audio and videos. Such technologies can enable the production of content that is realistic enough to target even the most skeptical users. According to experts, users should not assume that artificial intelligence outputs are always accurate or reliable. Cyber risks may increase when the creative methods developed by threat actors to bypass security mechanisms and the overconfidence of users in artificial intelligence responses come together.

It is important for students to use artificial intelligence consciously

In order for artificial intelligence-supported learning to be used effectively in education, it is important for teachers to guide this process. Although some people are still cautious about artificial intelligence, students and young people actively use these technologies. Therefore, students need to learn to use artificial intelligence correctly and ethically. Experts say that artificial intelligence tools can be used for supporting purposes such as developing ideas, obtaining preliminary information about the subject or editing texts; However, he emphasizes that preparing assignments entirely by artificial intelligence is not the right approach.

Security recommendations for the use of artificial intelligence

The widespread use of artificial intelligence tools ushers in a new era in phishing and fraud methods. For this reason, users should always be questioning when evaluating the information coming from artificial intelligence. ESET experts make the following suggestions:

  • Make sure to compare the information received from artificial intelligence with reliable sources.
  • Do not share your personal data and private information with chat bots
  • Be careful of suspicious links or downloadable files.
  • If there is a link provided by artificial intelligence, check the address. If it looks suspicious, don't click it.
  • Always approach AI output with caution; verify, especially if suggestions or answers seem unexpected.
  • Use strong, unique passwords and enable multi-factor authentication  to reduce the risk of credentials theft.
  • Make sure your devices, operating systems and software are up-to-date.
  • Use multi-layered protection from a trusted security provider against malware, phishing attacks and other threats.

AI tools can be a powerful tool for students when used correctly, experts say. can offer learning support. However, the way to stay safe in the digital world is to use technology consciously and question all kinds of information.
