The Facts Have Not Changed in Portugal Golden Visa: The Right to Citizenship Continues After 5 Years
The intense and sometimes misleading news in the media regarding the recent changes planned to be made in the Portuguese citizenship law creates uncertainty among investors. However, the current legal process and official situation provide a clearer picture, contrary to this perception.

Evaluating the issue, Çiğdem Sarıoğlu Ergut emphasizes that the process has not yet been completed and existing rights are protected:
"Although the changes planned to be made in the citizenship law have been passed by the parliament, they have not come into force yet. The regulation is currently in the review process of the Portuguese President. The President has 20 days to evaluate the text, approve it, veto it or refer it to the Constitutional Court." However, this period has not started yet, because the relevant text has not been officially communicated to the President.”
Contrary to the perception in the media and the public, Ergut points out that the changes in question have not yet been finalized and states that there are no changes that directly affect investors:
“Some of the news in the media in this process is speculative. It is not clear yet which changes will be accepted, how they will be reflected in citizenship applications or what the new criteria will be. "Given the current political environment, it is quite possible that additional discussions will be held before the law is finalized."
The Golden Visa Program Continues in the Same Way
Underlining the most critical point, Ergut states that the main advantages of the program are preserved for investors: They can apply for permanent residence at the end of the year, and this process continues to form the basis of the path to citizenship. There are no official proposals to change these conditions.”
Strategic Perspective: Clarity in Uncertainty
At a time when the demand for global mobility and alternative citizenship solutions is increasing, the Portuguese Golden Visa program still stands out as one of the strongest and predictable options in Europe.
The current situation is a critical message for investors. gives: While the main advantages of the program remain, the final decision on the changes has not yet been made.
